Description
Twycross House School is a house, now serving as a school, that dates back to 1703 and was extended in the 19th century. It features a striking red and blue brick chequer pattern with plain tiled roofs and a central brick ridge stack. The building has a lobby-entry plan with a service wing to the right and stands two storeys high on a stone plinth, complete with a plat band and a wooden modillion eaves cornice.
The front of the building has a regular five-window arrangement, highlighted by a single-bay pedimented central projection. This is slightly irregular due to a deep gabled two-bay projection to the right, which includes an end gable stack. The early 18th-century wooden cross-windows have lead lattice glazing, now painted, and are set in segment-headed surrounds. There are also two small garret windows at the end of the right-hand wing. A date plaque inscribed "W H S 1703" is located in the pediment above the entrance.
The entrance itself features a wide segmental pediment with a shallow fanlight and a six-panelled door, where the panels are raised and fielded. Inside, there are remnants of an early 18th-century splat baluster two-flight return stair, with square newels, a corniced upstanding rail, and a closed string. The hall includes a chamfered and stopped spine beam, a fireplace with a heavy reused bressumer, and panelled piers to arches with corniced window-sills.
In the drawing room, there is a later 18th-century wooden fire surround with heavy volute side supports. The sitting room features a marble bolection-moulded fire surround set within dado panelling, which continues as a mantel-shelf with egg and dart decoration above the fire surround. The study contains three arched cupboards with double panelled doors. Throughout the building, various bolection-moulded door surrounds with raised and fielded panelled doors can be found.
