Description
The former bank, now part of The Dixie Grammar School, was built around 1904 and designed by T H Whinney of Whinney Son & Austen Hall. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, featuring a deep ashlar base with a chamfered plinth, a moulded first-floor band, and a very deeply moulded and dentilated eaves cornice.
The building is two stories high with a four-window street front, arranged in a 3:1 pattern. On the right side, there is a single doorway with a moulded ashlar surround topped by a flat hood supported on brackets. The doorway features a double panel outer door and an overlight with oval glazing. Above this, there is a single 9-pane glazing bar sash in a moulded ashlar surround with a bracketed sill.
To the left, there are three closely spaced windows, all in linked and slightly projecting ashlar surrounds. The central window has a 16-pane glazing bar sash with a projecting surround flanked by Ionic three-quarter columns supporting a pediment. The other two windows are single 12-pane glazing bar sashes with a continuous entablature above.
On the upper level, there is a central 12-pane glazing bar sash flanked by single 9-pane sashes, all in moulded ashlar surrounds. The cornice is topped by an open balustraded parapet. This building is a fine example of an Edwardian bank.
