Description
Foxton Locks on the Grand Union Canal Leicester Line is a staircase flight of ten locks, constructed between 1810 and 1812 and restored in 1909. The structure consists of two groups of five locks, with a passing pound in between and side pounds. The top lock features a single gate, followed by five chambers, each equipped with double gates and a footbridge. After the passing pound, there is a single gable and then five descending chambers, also with double gates, where the lower four chambers are crossed by footbridges. The flight concludes at the Bottom Lock. Each chamber is lined with brick and contains an inset brick dated 1909. The Grand Union Canal, engineered by Benjamin Bevan, was completed in 1814.
