Description
Nos. 5 and 6 Powell Row are a pair of almshouses built in 1847. They were one of three pairs established by Wakelin Welch and his wife, Elizabeth. The buildings are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring yellow stone dressings and a decorated tile roof with crested ridge tiles. They are semi-detached with rear wings and have shallow external end stacks with paired shafts, as well as end stacks to the wings. The end gable walls are topped with coping and kneelers.
The front facade is symmetrical with four windows, all of which are casements set in stone surrounds. The side bays have two-light windows on the first floor and three-light windows on the ground floor. The central bays are under a gable with coping and kneelers, featuring two single-light windows connected by a string course that rises to frame a central shield in a recessed panel. Below, there are four-centred arched doorways with planked doors. Additionally, there are two-light windows on the ground-floor side elevations and first-floor rear. This building is part of a charming group of three almost identical almshouses.
