Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Powell Row are a pair of almshouses built in 1847. They were established by Wakelin Welch and his wife, Elizabeth. The buildings are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring yellow stone dressings, and have a decorated tile roof with crested ridge tiles. They are semi-detached with rear wings and stand two storeys tall.
The exterior includes shallow end stacks with paired shafts and end stacks on the wings. The end gable walls are topped with coping and kneelers. The front is symmetrical with a four-window arrangement, where all windows are casements set in stone surrounds. The side bays have two-light windows on the first floor and three-light windows on the ground floor. The central bay, which is under a gable with coping and kneelers, features two single-light windows connected by a string course that rises to contain a central shield in a recessed panel. Below this, there are four-centred arched doorways with planked doors. The building also has stone quoining and the rear wings have two-light windows on the ground-floor side elevations and the first-floor rear. This pair of almshouses is part of an attractive set of three almost identical structures.
