Description

The Old Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century that was restored in the later 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with large panels, straight and curved braces, and infilling made of plastered brick and wattle and daub. The roof is covered with Welsh slate. The cottage has a three-unit plan and is one-and-a-half storeys tall, with gabled dormers that have barge-boards and finials. There are two brick chimneys at the ends of the roof on the front slopes and a rear chimney to the left of the center. The windows are irregularly arranged, with three on the ground floor, all of which are later 20th-century wooden casements. To the right of center, there is a later 20th-century ribbed half-glazed door with a small flat wooden hood supported by brackets. Inside, the cottage has timber-framed partitions, large spine beams and joists on the ground floor, three inglenook fireplaces, some early doors, and wide floorboards on the first floor. The Old Cottage is a good example of the local vernacular farmhouse type, with its plan form and structure largely intact.
