Description

The conservatory attached to North Kilworth House was built in 1888, likely designed by A. E. Purdie for J. B. N. Entwistle. It features a combination of cast iron and wood, along with plain and stained leaded glass. The structure has a rendered and moulded plinth with a brick base that is decorated with glazed tiles. It is a single-storey building with a central large pavilion flanked by two smaller side pavilions.

The south front showcases a central 5-bay pedimented porch that projects forward by 2 bays, featuring central round-headed double doors surrounded by narrow side bays and wider bays, each separated by 6 moulded square wooden columns. The pediment is glazed with a central circular panel and two triangular side panels, topped by an iron weathervane with corner ball finials. Each side of the central pavilion has 3 bays, which are completed by the 5-bay side pavilions. Each bay contains a large segment-headed window with leaded and partly stained glass, along with a small overlight featuring stained glass.

The central pavilion is crowned by a 3-tier lantern, with the central section containing 3 round-headed stained glass lights, a small 2-light lantern above with a lead roof and an ornate iron finial, and lower 3-bay side lanterns, also with ornate iron finials. The side pavilions are topped by square lanterns with ogee roofs and ornate iron finials.

Inside, the north aisle is separated by a row of exceptionally ornate iron columns with tall bases, fluted shafts, and exaggerated capitals. The main roof structure is wooden, supported by ornate iron bases and strengthened bars and trusses. The floor features a circular central section and cross aisles between raised beds, decorated with Italian mosaics and lined with iron heating grills.
