Description

This is a former school building dating from 1725, with extensions in 1836 and 1887. It is constructed of red brick with a Welsh slate roof, brick ridge details, and end stacks. The building comprises three ranges. The right-hand range dates from 1725 and originally formed the school. The left-hand range, also dating from 1725, was raised by an additional storey and extended in 1836, and incorporates the former master’s house. A rear range was added in 1887.

The right-hand range is single-storey high, featuring six 16/16 sash windows and a brick coped gable. A central door is accessed via four stone steps, and consists of a two-leaved, eight-panelled door with a wooden panel above. Gauged brick lintels are present. The left-hand range has a projecting gable facing forward, with a brick band marking the storeys. It is three storeys high, with three 6/6 sash windows on each floor. The second floor has a 3/6 sash window blind on either side. The ground floor has two 6/6 sashes and a doorcase to the right, leading to a six-panelled door with glazed top panels, accessible by three stone steps and a flat, bracketed canopy. Further 6/6 and 3/6 sashes are located at the rear. The rear range is also three storeys high. The entrance hall and two rooms within the left-hand range retain 18th-century panelling. The building was formerly Kibworth Grammar School.
