Description
The Old Grammar School is a Grade I listed building dating back to 1614. It is a restored timber-framed structure with an open ground floor that was previously used for market activities, and a former schoolroom located above. The building features substantial framing supported by a timber arcade consisting of three and two bays, with ten octagonal posts resting on stone plinths, curved braces, and dragon beams above. The first floor has plastered infilling adorned with pargetting from a restoration in 1868. The building has oversailing central gables and a roof turret that was originally constructed in 1697, which contained a bell of the same date that was replaced in 1868 when a rear staircase wing was added. A quotation from Ephesians II is painted around the entire building on the bressumers, along with a record of its foundation and endowment by Robert Smythe in 1614.
