Description
Symingtons Factory, built in 1884, is located on Church Square and extends to Adam and Eve Street. This building is made of red brick and features a slate roof. It includes a prominent square tower at the north end of the Church Square facade, which is characterized by outer brick pilasters, an eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The tower has a truncated pyramidal roof that ends in a domed cupola, with four louvred vents forming a continuous band on each facade near the top. The roof curves out above the louvred panels and is supported by arched brackets. The factory has five storeys; the top storey features a band of five windows, while below it has a four-light window with mullions, a transom, and a large round-arched light with radial glazing bars. The first and second floors contain three sash windows each, and the ground floor is advanced under a penthouse roof, showcasing a five-light window with mullions.
The angled corner section of the building has three storeys and three windows, with an eaves cornice and a parapet that rises in the center, along with a corner entrance. The facade facing Adam and Eve Street has four storeys, an eaves cornice, and a parapet. The center features a large gable with a window in a round-arched recess, flanked by two windows to the west (with the first and second floors now bricked up) and two pairs of windows to the east. Smaller paired gables flank these, followed by two pairs of windows to the east and two single windows to the west. The western end of this facade is terminated by a large gable similar to the center. All top windows below the gables have round-arched top lights with radial glazing, while the top storey windows have brick mullions, and those between gables have flat arches. The eastern part of No 11 and its tower in Church Square are notable landmarks in both close and distant views of the town center.
