Description
The rear range to Number 8 on Church Street is a building dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features a stuccoed facade with quoins and is three storeys tall. The front has three windows with segmental arches; the first-floor windows have keystones and are fitted with sashes that include glazing bars, although the lower windows have modified openings. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front.
The rear wing is constructed of red brick, with a facade that dates from the 18th to early 19th century, exhibiting part irregular brick bond and part Flemish bond. The roof is covered with slates. This wing is two storeys high and has four windows, which are generally sashes with glazing bars, along with one early leaded casement. Inside, the building has timber framing in the partitions between rooms, with some timbers cut through, likely due to the building being heightened.
The rear wing continues to form the east side of Aldwinckle's Yard, which is made of red brick with timber uprights in the wall. This area has two storeys and approximately eight windows, with the end two in an advanced cottage that terminates this range, featuring generally casement windows. Aldwinckle's Yard is noted as the most complete example of the colonization of a medieval burgage plot remaining in the town.
