Description

The rear range to numbers 10 and 12 on Church Street is a late 18th century to early 19th century building. It features a painted roughcast facade and a slate roof, rising to three storeys. Number 10 has one window with a modern casement on the top floor, a three-light unbarred sash window on the first floor, and a small altered late 19th century shop front on the ground floor. Number 12 has two windows, both sashes with glazing bars. Its ground floor includes an early 20th century shop front with an advanced cornice. There is a round-arched entrance to the rear, leading to Aldwinckle's Yard, situated between numbers 10 and 12. The interior of number 12 features beams and a large fireplace lintel with an early 17th century stop, as well as a door with early 17th century moulding. The rear wing forms the western side of Aldwinckle's Yard, which includes a red brick three-storey section at the back of number 12, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof and an off-centre chimney. This section has three windows, generally late 18th century to early 19th century casements. Behind this, there is a two-storey section with five windows, also featuring late 18th century to early 19th century casements. Aldwinckle's Yard is noted as the most complete example of the colonization of a medieval burgage plot remaining in the town.
