Description

Number 74 East Street, dating from the late 18th century, is a two-storey building constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings. It features a modillion eaves cornice and a parapet with ashlar piers and sunk panels. The building has rusticated quoins and five ranges of sash windows with glazing bars, each set within eared architraves adorned with triple keystones. The central three bays project slightly and are topped with a pediment supported by fluted consoles, featuring a circular window in the tympanum with a moulded surround and four triple keystones.

On the first floor, there is a Venetian window in the center, with its cill resting on moulded consoles, flanked by fluted Ionic columns and pilasters that support a full entablature with a dentilled cornice. The entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight, set in panelled reveals and framed by fluted Ionic three-quarter columns that also support an entablature with a pattern and a pediment featuring modillions and dentils. To the right, there is a one-bay extension. Above an elliptically arched carriage entrance, there is a sash window with glazing bars, moulded imposts, and a keystone, with panelled carriage doors below.

Inside, there is contemporary joinery and good marble fireplaces. The garden walls behind Number 74 are also of red brick, with the end parts made of rubble and ramped to a much higher end wall opposite Folly Mill. Number 74, along with Nos 74 to 92 (even), forms a group, and the garden walls are part of a group with No 76 (Gladstone Cottage) and Folly Mill on Folly Mill Lane.
