Description

The gatepiers located to the west of No 79 Jessoppe House date from the early to mid 18th century and may represent a rebuilding of a 17th-century house, where Dr. Thomas Jessoppe is believed to have lived in the 1630s. The gatepiers are made of hammer-dressed stone and are part of a property that features a pitched tile roof, two storeys, and an attic. The building has a stone modillion eaves cornice and a parapet that is cement rendered. It includes five ranges of sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded flush frames, with stone lintels that have projecting key blocks. An attic dormer is also present. The round-headed doorway features a flat rendered archivolt, a keystone, and a fanlight.

At the rear, there is a four-storey parapetted red brick tower, which has one range of casement windows with rubber voussoirs. This tower is thought to have been constructed by Captain Jessoppe to allow him to see his ships in the harbour over the roof of No 74 opposite. Additionally, there is a two-storey rubble extension at the rear, which has chamfered ceiling beams and may be a remnant of Dr. Jessoppe's original house. The interior of the ground floor includes early 19th-century joinery, and one room on the east side features early 18th-century fielded panelling up to dado level. The bedrooms contain cupboards with fielded panelling and one mid-19th-century cast iron fireplace, with doors that have fielded panels throughout.

The gatepiers and the associated buildings Nos 61 to 115 (odd), along with the wall from the east end of No 115, form a group.
