Description
No 6 High Street is an early 19th-century building that hides a 17th-century house with a rear wing, which is fundamentally a timber-framed open hall of medieval origin and cruck construction. Inside, three pairs of crucks are visible, although the eastern pair is damaged, and there is smoke blackening on the second pair. The street facade is faced with stucco, grooved to imitate masonry, and features rusticated quoins and a small parapet. The building has a steeply pitched slate roof and stands 2 ½ storeys tall with two dormers. There are three windows that have moulded and shouldered architraves, pulvinated friezes, and segmental pediments. The ground floor has modern shop windows but retains an ornamental frieze and a modillion cornice. This structure is noted as the only remaining example of a hall house still existing in the town.
