Description
The Church of St Mary in Arden, originally the Parish Church of Market Harborough, was rebuilt around 1693 to the designs of Henry Dormer on the site of an earlier church. The building is a simple oblong structure that is currently roofless, constructed of stone rubble faced with limestone ashlar. It features very shallow gables and a light cornice, with plain stonework on the windows. The south porch, which includes Norman "Beaks Head" decoration, retains a 14th or early 15th-century outer doorway. The porch is made of ironstone and has 17th-century limestone quoins, one of which is dated 1660 and bears initials that may belong to the mason. A few feet of rubble wall, visible only from the interior, remains on the east and west sides of the porch from the earlier building. Inside the south porch, there is an early 14th-century effigy of a lady that is broken and defaced.
