Description

The Claybrooke Parva War Memorial was erected around 1920, designed by Fosbrooke and Bedingfield, to commemorate the men of the parish who died in the First World War. A later addition records those who fell in the Second World War. The memorial is a square structure featuring a stone wheel-head cross embellished with interlaced carvings, set upon a tapering shaft and a square plinth that narrows as it rises. The entire monument stands upon a two-stepped base. A slate tablet on the front (east) face of the plinth bears a dedication remembering the men of the parish who lost their lives during the Great War (1914-1918), followed by a list of names. A second slate tablet on the base commemorates those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945), again with a list of names. A stone vase memorial, commemorating a local serviceman who died in Hong Kong in 1955, sits in front of the main war memorial.
