Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church, formerly a chapel, likely dating from the 13th century, though it underwent restoration in 1848 and 1860. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble with brick transepts and features a Welsh slate roof. The building is single-celled with a bell turret above the buttressed west wall. On the south side, there are two chamfered lancets and a medieval gabled south porch that was restored in the 19th century, complete with a new archway. Inside, there is a small king post roof and a 17th-century door inscribed with "William Collinson gave this 1618," above which is a plain tympanum.

The early 19th-century brick transept has coped gables with stone kneelers; the south transept was reconstructed in 1860 and features an intersecting traceried window. The north transept has a Victorian Decorated 2-light window. The chancel is buttressed and includes a Perpendicular south window and a Decorated east window of three lights, with Victorian tracery, although the hood mould and corbel heads may date back to the 14th century. There is a sill band below, and tombstones built into the wall, including two fine slate memorials from 1765 and 1760.

The interior of the church is very open, with no division between the nave and chancel. The lancet windows are all set in deep splays, and the roof is simply boarded. Although the transepts were added in the 19th century, the arches leading to them appear medieval, featuring a roll moulded arch that springs from flat abaci. The transepts have scissor-braced roofs, and the south transept contains a plain octagonal font, while the chancel features a simply shaped piscina.
