Description

The Old School is a former school building dating from 1857. It was built by Sir Arthur Hazlerigg. The structure is of coursed ironstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof. It is arranged as a 1½-storeyed building with five bays, including projecting gabled wings. The outer bays feature 2-centred arched doorways on their inner faces, along with a wide 3-light square-headed window to the ground floor and an ornate, foiled 3-light window above, both with hood moulds. Blank shields are positioned in the apex of the canted and corbelled-out gables. The central doorway has a 4-centred archway with a squared hood mould and decorative spandrels, flanked by windows of three trefoiled lights with hood moulds. Axial stacks are present, featuring slender octagonal shafts.
