Description
The Old Forge is a cottage and forge dating from the late 18th century, located on the north side of Main Street in Illston on the Hill. It is constructed of red brick with a Welsh slate roof and features a brick stack at the left end. The building has a brick band and dentilled eaves. The front has two storeys, with a centre-opening three-light casement window. To the right of this window is a door, with a tiny top-opening one-light window to its left, all set beneath cambered lintels. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed garage on the left end and a 20th-century two-storey extension at the rear. On the right end, there is a one-storey outbuilding that contains the forge, which has a corrugated asbestos-type roof and an end stack. This outbuilding features a double doorway with plank doors and a two-light casement window to the right. Inside the cottage, there is an inglenook fireplace.
