Description

This is a stone garden feature, probably originally a fountain basin, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. It comprises a square basin set upon a pedestal base. Each of the four sides is carved with coats of arms, bull’s heads, and Latin numerals, the latter of which are difficult to decipher. The coats of arms are those of the Nevill family, and the bull’s heads represent their crest. The Nevill family inherited Nevill Holt after 1474. The feature is located in the centre of a walled garden which was formerly part of the grounds of Nevill Holt Hall and is aligned with a principal reception room. It is likely the feature was moved to its present position in the 19th century, following changes to the estate made by the Cunard family. The feature holds group value with Nevill Holt Hall and the associated garden walls.
