Description
The remains of the walls to the old hall grounds at Cotes are boundary walls of the vanished Cotes Hall, largely dating from the 16th century and now in a ruinous state. They form a square enclosure approximately 70 yards on each side. The walls are constructed from various materials, including English bond brickwork, limestone and granite rubble, with some ashlar work visible on the internal face. There are plinths and chamfering in parts, and angled brickwork on a gradient in some areas. A gateway is formed in the middle of the northwest face, with a structure that runs down to the river, suggesting it may have been a former water gate. Additionally, there is a smaller enclosure further to the northwest.
Cotes Hall had 26 hearths recorded in the hearth tax of 1666 but was destroyed sometime in the 18th century. In 1800, Nichols noted that "large fragments of the walls still remain," and mentioned that "the entire garden, fenced in with a good stone wall, has been for some time let to gardeners." Whites Directory from 1877 also referenced traces of the ancient hall, old terraces, a boathouse, and a fine old barn.
