Description
No. 22 Clay Street is a house composed of two right-angled sections, with the street-facing part likely dating from the late 18th century and having been refenestrated. The building is constructed of brick and has two storeys with three bays, plus an additional later bay on the right. The ground floor features wood mullion and transom windows with small panes and flat arched heads. The central doorway on the left side is set in a moulded case and has an overlight above. The eaves cornice is nogged, and there is an inglenook fireplace inside. The house has axial and gable end stacks and various 19th-century additions at the rear. Additionally, there is a large two-storey range at the rear, built in blue and red chequered brickwork, which includes a date stone marked 1710, along with possibly an earlier, illegible date. This range has one window on the ground floor and two above, all featuring wood mullions and transoms, with later inserts. The building has a basement and a steeply pitched roof with overhanging eaves. There is also a lower two-storey outbuilding made of brick, which has an outside staircase in blue and red brick leading to a door on the first floor.
