Description
Old John Tower is a folly tower built in 1787, located in Bradgate Park. It is constructed from granite and slate rubblestone, with brick window dressings. The tower is circular and designed in the Gothic style, consisting of two storeys. It features four pointed arch windows on the ground floor, with the upper floor having blanks and renewed Y tracery, some of which are partly boarded, and one is blocked. The tower has a bracketed cornice and battlements, along with a doorway that has a pointed arch and door. To the left of the tower, there is a pointed archway in a wall with a ruined top. This Georgian folly is situated on a high former windmill hill, intended to serve as a feature and to provide stunning views from the top. It is a notable landmark that forms a group with the nearby War Memorial.
