Description
Lane End Cottage is a house, originally built as a school around 1695, with extensions added in 1913 and later. It is constructed of granite and slate rubble stone, with a hipped roof covered in Swithland slate and end and rear roof stacks, the right one truncated. The front facade has two and a half storeys and features four casement windows, comprising single-light and three two-light windows, some with top lights. Three dormers are positioned above the roofline. A 20th-century porch with a partially glazed door is centrally located on the ground floor. To the left are a two-light casement window with top lights, a twelve-pane fixed light window, and another two-light casement window with top lights. To the right is a single-light casement window and a 20th-century canted bay window, part of the 1913 extension. A single-storey 20th-century extension is present at the right end of the building. Some windows are topped with brick lintels. A first-floor casement window and a 20th-century garage are located on the left end. Rear windows, also some with brick lintels, are visible. The interior features chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, likely dating to the original construction, along with a probably contemporary staircase. The building was originally Rawlins School, founded by a refugee from the Great Plague. Historical details are described in Nicjols' History and Antiquities of Leicestershire, 1795-1811, Volume III, page 115 and plate XVII.
