Description

The Elms is a house from the early 19th century, now part of the University of Loughborough. It is built of ashlar and features two storeys with a three-window range. There is a projecting band between the ground and first floors, along with a cornice and blocking course. The ground floor has segmental-headed recesses for the windows, each with a cornice below the tympana. A four-columned Ionic porch with steps on three sides encloses a round-headed entrance. The central window on the first floor has a flat pediment supported by console brackets above it. The right-hand return elevation has five windows, all modern or blocked, with a flat pediment over the central window. The rear elevation includes five windows and a pedimented doorcase. Inside, there is a stone cantilevered staircase in an oval well beneath an enriched cornice and lantern. The house was built for Thomas Warner, a hosiery manufacturer.
