Description

A range of six cottages forming an L-shaped building on Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, was constructed in 1859 by William Butterfield for the Winstanley estate. The building is constructed of red brick with decorative patterns using blue brick headers, and has a 20th-century tiled roof and battered brick chimneys. The design is plain and asymmetrical. The north front has approximately ten bays, with four bays to the left being at a slightly lower level than the remainder. It features irregular gables: the left bay is gabled, and bays three, six, and nine are slightly advanced with narrow gables, while bays two, seven, and eight have small gables above the first-floor windows. The windows are wooden casements, mostly two-light on the first floor and single or three-light on the ground floor. The fully gabled bays contain 20th-century glazed and barred doors. All ground-floor openings are framed by segmental relieving arches constructed with alternating red and blue brick. The left bay, originally the bailiff's house, is slightly more elaborate with a cogged first-floor string and diapering between the storeys, although the ground floor has been altered to include a wide 20th-century barred wooden window and door. A blind, diapered bay is located on the right-hand side. A similar rear range is present.
