Description

Thurlaston Grange is a house located on the north side of London Road in the parish of Elvaston. It was built in the early 18th century, with an addition made in 1765, and was later remodelled and enlarged around 1800, along with some minor alterations in the 20th century. The house features a hipped concrete tile roof with wide eaves and a brick ridge stack on the front range, while the rear roof is covered in Welsh slate with brick stacks.

The building is two storeys high, arranged in a T-plan with six bays. The entrance has an off-centre Tuscan doorcase topped with a triangular pediment, a traceried fanlight, and double glazed doors. On the east side, there are two tall glazing bar sashes beneath rusticated wedge lintels with double keystones, while the west side has three similar sashes. Above these, there are six more sashes with a continuous plain sill band. In the roof, there are three 20th-century flat-headed dormers with casements.

The east elevation has five full-height openings with similar rusticated lintels on both the ground and first floors. The two southern openings on each floor are blocked, while the three northern openings contain glazing bar sashes. The early 18th-century rear wing has been restyled in the early 19th century.

Inside, the house features early 18th-century doors in the rear wing and fine mahogany panelled doors in the front range. The staircase includes re-used 18th-century balusters with a 19th-century newel and is illuminated by an oval lantern with a domed glass top and swagged sides. A notable feature is the fine late 18th-century white marble fireplace in the north-east room of the front range, which has delicate Blue John inlay on the jambs and a carved keystone. This room also includes carved overdoors.
