Description
High Bridge is a bridge that carries a track over the Trent and Mersey Grand Trunk Canal. It was designed by engineer James Brindley and constructed around 1777. The bridge is made of red brick with sandstone dressings, with later repairs using red and blue brick. It features a single segmental arch with a drip mould. The walls curve outward at the ends to form end piers. The plain parapet walls are ramped towards the center and topped with stone copings. On each side above the arch, there is an oval metal plaque displaying the bridge number, 26. The Trent and Mersey Grand Trunk Canal was authorized by an act in 1766, opened to a point near Stafford in 1770, and completed in 1777.
