Description
The Canal Aqueduct, built around 1777, carries the Trent and Mersey Grand Trunk Canal over the River Dove. It was engineered by James Brindley. The structure is made of red brick, with later repairs in red and blue bricks, and features sandstone copings. It has twenty-three low segmental arches, of which twelve are visible, supported by piers that have impost bands. Above the arches, the walls are plain with flat copings and lack parapets. The walls curve out at the ends to form square piers. The Trent and Mersey Grand Trunk Canal was authorized by an act in 1766, opened to a point near Stafford in 1770, and was completed in 1777.
