Description

The National School, now a workshop, was built in 1822, with later additions from the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings to the addition, and has a slate roof with brick coped gables, a brick gable stack to the west, and a dentilled eaves band. The original building is two storeys and five bays, with a late 19th-century addition to the south. The east-facing gabled elevation has steps leading to a central double-chamfered pointed brick doorcase, with painted inner mouldings on iron shafts and a returned brick hoodmould. Pointed windows flank the doorcase, each with brick returned hoods and Gothick traceried metal lights. Above the door is a plain stone plaque inscribed 'National School, erected 1822. Founded 1738', with another pointed window above, featuring similar glazing. A pedimented gable sits above, containing a small blocked circular window. The recessed, south-facing addition has segment-headed glazing bar sashes. The north elevation, facing Penn Lane, features five pointed windows with returned brick hoods and Gothick traceried metal lights on both the ground and first floors.
