Description

Walnut Farmhouse and attached outbuilding date from the 17th century, with substantial additions in 1730 and later alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick with gauged brick and plain brick dressings, and has plain tile roofs. The 1730 block is a three-storey, three-bay structure to the north, while the later 18th-century wing is two storeys and two bays to the south. The 1730 house features plain brick bands on the first and second floors, with gauged brick dressings to the ground and first floors, and an irregular facade. The front door is centrally located, raised, fielded panelled, and set within a moulded timber surround, accessed by a 19th-century semi-circular headed porch with lattice-work sides. There are glazing bar sash windows above and either side of the door, with segment-headed arches over. Above these are more sash windows, also under segment heads. A lead gutter with a decorative hopper head inscribed 'WWE 1730' is located on the south gable wall. The rear elevation includes segment-headed sliding sashes. The attached 18th-century wing has an irregular facade with a raised and fielded panelled door under a segmental head, flanked by tall fixed-pane, segment-headed cross windows to the north. Two irregularly placed 2-light glazing bar casements sit above, all under segment heads. The rear elevation of this wing has a catslide roof over a later lean-to. Attached to the north side of the 1730 house is a large timber-framed outbuilding with brick nogging, running east-west and attached to the house by a plain tile roof with an open archway. Later brick buildings attached to the west end of the outbuilding are not part of the listing. Inside the 1730 block, features include a dogleg staircase with a moulded handrail, original panelled doors, a roof beam inscribed '1730', re-used 17th-century panelling in a north first-floor bedroom, C18 panelling in a rear southern room with raised panels, moulded dado and cornice, large chamfered beams with ogee stops, and a large inglenook fireplace with panelled cupboards to either side in the southern front room.
