Description
The dovecote located to the south-east of Fanshawe Gate Hall dates back to the early 17th century. It is constructed from coursed coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins and coped gables with moulded kneelers. The stone slate roof covers a single bay structure that has three storeys and an attic level used for housing doves.
The west elevation is built into a bank and has stacked openings at the centre of the gable, which include two doorways with quoined surrounds and an overloft entry framed in stone. The overloft entry now has a timber shutter set back from the front face, with openings for nesting boxes. The first-floor doorway has a plain plank door and is flanked by single light openings that have moulded surrounds and dripmoulds. The north elevation features a first-floor doorway, a blocked oeil-de-boeuf window, and a single light opening with a moulded surround above.
