Description

Cartledge Grange is a house dating from the early 17th century, with 20th-century extensions. It is built from coursed coal measures sandstone, rising from a shallow chamfered plinth, and features quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and gable and ridge stone stacks, one of which is now made of artificial stone. The roof is covered with stone slates and concrete tiles.

The house has an L-plan layout, with a 20th-century extension in artificial stone at the east end. The south elevation has two storeys with attics and four bays. The gabled range to the west is slightly advanced and has stacked 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows beneath dripmoulds, with the ground floor window being deeper. The main range features three windows, with the two eastern bays having 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows with transoms and continuous dripmoulds above. At ground floor level, the dripmould steps down over the lintel of a blocked doorway with a quoined surround. The west bay includes a 20th-century lean-to porch at the angle of the two ranges, with a 2-light mullioned window above it.

At eaves level on the advanced range, there are remains of stone spouts, with the one on the east side being almost intact. The interior has been much altered, but it retains a roof truss with curved principals and one curved wind brace. The two-bay 20th-century addition at the east end is not considered to be of special interest. The house underwent restoration, and a former 17th-century gable to the north-west was reinstated in 1986.
