Description
This building is a farm outbuilding located to the south of Hall Farmhouse. It dates from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and remodelling in the 20th century. The structure is timber framed, raised from a low stone plinth, and later encased in rubble Coal Measures Sandstone and 18th-century red brick. The roof is primarily stone slated, although the north-eastern slope has been mostly replaced with Welsh slate.
The north-east elevation features two storeys and four bays, including two single doorways. One doorway has a quoined surround at the south-east end, while the other is a plain opening with a planked door and overlight. There is also an inserted double doorway supported by a steel joist in the centre, along with three plain taking-in doors at the first-floor level. A stone staircase is located at the south-east gable.
The south-west elevation displays exposed frame posts, with two posts linked by braces to the exposed wall plate. The remains of the original plinth at the south-east end include blocked triangular vents, and there are lancet and cruciform breathers found in the cladding of the stonework and brickwork, respectively.
Inside, the building features tie-beam roof trusses with queen struts that support single side purlins and ridge purlins. Some of the purlins are 20th-century replacements, and all but three wind braces are now missing. The trusses rest on jowel posts, and three transverse braces linking the posts and tie beams are still intact. This farm outbuilding is notable for clearly indicating a timber-framed phase prior to its stone construction, which is uncommon in upland Derbyshire.
