Description
The farm outbuildings to the east of Holmesfield Hall are a Grade II* listed structure, originally built in the 15th century with alterations and additions from the 17th century. Constructed from coursed coal measures sandstone, the buildings feature quoins, plain gables on the north range, and a coped gable at the south end of the east range, all topped with Welsh slated roofs that have stone slated eaves courses. The layout is an irregular T-plan, originally designed in an L-plan, with a 17th-century rear wing added.
The north range consists of four bays and includes a central full-height double doorway, a single taking-in door to the east, and several single light openings at ground level. The attached east range also has four bays, featuring two plain ground floor doorways with boarded doors and a single window at the north end.
Inside the north range, there is a five-bay king post truss roof supporting a single purlin roof. The arch-braced tie beam on the west side of the double doorway has curved struts, a moulded fillet on the tie beam soffit, and a six-petal rose boss. The wall plates have pegholes indicating the position of mortices for a close studded frame, and jowel posts remain in place within the walling east of the doorway, with mortices for side braces. The soffits of the tie beams to the east of the doorway also show mortice holes. The east range has three bays with trusses that match those in the north range but lack embellishment. There are remains of some jowel posts in the walling. Additionally, a single bay to the north of the north range features a single cruck truss supporting a double purlin roof. The internal timber structure indicates that this building was once a timber framed open hall with an ancillary crosswing serving as a service or lodging range.
