Description

Numbers 24-28, including the premises occupied by Scarlett Ribbons, New Wizard, and Woodheads, is a terrace of shops with a dwelling at the rear. It dates from around 1500 and was significantly remodeled after 1700, with further alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed coal measures sandstone, which encases the remains of a close studded timber frame; much of the stonework is now covered by roughcast and smooth render. Originally designed as a T-plan house, it now features a gabled addition at the rear and flat-roofed single-storey shop units at the front. The street elevation includes 19th-century casement windows and some 20th-century frames on the first floor. The timber frame is still visible at the first floor level, with some corner posts potentially remaining full height. The main range has four bays and close studded partition walls leading to the attic. The north-east gable is partially exposed in the adjacent property at first floor level and features a close studded truss with corner posts that have large jowelled heads and an arch-braced tie beam, along with a collar above. This truss supports a double purlin roof, and there are substantial windbraces in the attic. At the rear of the property, within the angle of two ranges at the north-east end, there is a square stone tower, which is partially rendered and capped at eaves level; this may have served as an external stack. The single-storey shop units at the street front are not of special interest.
