Description
This is a house, originally a barn, dating from the early 16th century or earlier, with alterations and additions in the 17th century and conversion to residential use in 1975. The structure is built of coursed rubble coal measures sandstone, featuring quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and an interlocking pantile roof. The west elevation presents as a single-storey building with attics, and comprises four bays. A wide central opening now serves as a garage door, incorporating a doorway and window opening to the south, both beneath plain stone lintels. Four 20th-century gabled dormers are visible on the roof, the two central ones being hipped. Inside, the barn retains two massive, full-height cruck trusses that rise from padstones within the walls; these trusses have yokes, collar beams, and a ridge purlin, with single purlins trenched into the backs of the principals. The original tie beams have been lost. Significant curved windbraces are dovetail lap-jointed onto the cruck blades.
