Description
This building is a farm outbuilding, formerly used as a stable or cowhouse, located to the south-east of Holmesfield Hall. It dates from the early 17th century and has undergone some alterations and additions in the 20th century. The structure is built from coursed coal measures sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a stone slated roof.
The south elevation has two storeys and four bays, with a central ground floor opening framed by a plain surround, and a flight of stone steps at the west end that leads to an inserted first floor opening. There are three first floor 2-light recessed chamfer mullioned windows, one of which is now blocked. The rear elevation includes two 2-light chamfer mullioned windows with dripmoulds above, as well as two doorways with quoined surrounds and massive lintels, one of which is also blocked.
Inside, plain collar beam trusses support a single purlin roof. Notably, a massive stone buttress was added to the east end in the 1950s.
