Description

A late 18th-century farmhouse, with extensions from the 19th century and alterations in the 20th, now divided into two houses at 3 and 5 Hague Street, Glossop. The building is constructed of painted coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings, and has a stone slate roof and four stone stacks.

The original plan comprised a three-unit farmhouse with service rooms to the rear, and later additions. The street front of number 3 features a regular two-window facade, with a plinth. There is a central doorway with a 20th-century door in an ashlar surround, flanked by single three-light flush mullion windows. Above are two similar three-light windows. A blocked doorway is to the right, and beyond it, quoins mark the extent of the original building. The street front of number 5 to the right presents an irregular three-window facade. An off-centre doorway is set in an ashlar surround, with a three-light casement to the left and a two-light casement to the right. Above are a three-light casement and two two-light casements. The extreme right section of number 5 has a stepped roof line and a blank elevation. Both houses have 20th-century diamond-leaded panes in wooden casement windows. The left return side has three 20th-century casements and a single two-light casement above.

Inside number 5, original squared stone fireplaces and some original spine beams remain. The spine wall originally divided the house longitudinally into two cottages.
