Description
Hobb Hill Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates back to 1638 and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from millstone grit, with some parts rendered, and features tooled ashlar dressings. It has a stone slate roof and brick stacks, one of which is rendered.
The cottage has a gabled front and a flush wing, standing two storeys tall. The street-facing side has quoins and an asymmetrical arrangement of two windows, with a gable on the left side. There is an off-centre doorway that contains a 20th-century glazed door set in a flush ashlar surround. To the left, there is a 20th-century two-light casement window in a similar surround. To the right, there is a single three-light 20th-century casement window in a chamfered ashlar surround, complete with a hoodmould. Above these, there are two two-light windows in deeply chamfered ashlar surrounds; the left window has a hoodmould, while the right window is positioned at eaves level and has a datestone below it inscribed with "1638/ R J".
On the left return, there is a single two-light window with a timber replacement mullion in a chamfered surround at ground level. The right return features a single two-light 20th-century window in a chamfered ashlar surround with a hoodmould at the first floor level. The left return also has a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch, above which is a single casement window, and above that is a small garret keeping hole in a chamfered ashlar surround.
Inside, the principal room on the right has a chamfered and stopped beam, and there is an original staircase that is reputed to be made of stone.
