Description
This is a mid-18th century house located on Hague Street in Whitfield, Glossop, with alterations made in the 20th century and extensions to the rear. The house is constructed of coursed millstone grit with tooled ashlar dressings, and has stone slate roofs and two stone end stacks with watertabling.
The front elevation has an irregular two-window range. An off-centre 20th-century door is set within a square-headed surround, flanked by a single window to the left and a smaller window to the right, both with ashlar surrounds and 20th-century casements. Above, there is a single former three-light mullion window, from which the mullions have been removed, and to the right a narrow window, both in ashlar surrounds with 20th-century casements. The left return to the street features two blind gables. The right return is obscured by single-storey extensions. The rear elevation shows a single window to each floor, originally three-light windows, now without mullions.
The interior has been significantly altered. Beams in the kitchen are believed to have once supported a flagstone floor to a first-floor bedroom, and the second bedroom reportedly had a timber floor. The staircase has been moved from its original position.
The house was previously owned by Sir John Wood, a local industrialist, who let it to his workers.
