Description

A row of three weavers' cottages, built in the late 18th century and restored in the 20th century, stands on Hague Street in Whitfield. The cottages are constructed of narrow coursed millstone grit rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, and have stone slate roofs and stone ridge stacks with watertabling. Each cottage originally comprised two units.

The cottages present an irregular seven-window facade arranged in a 3:2:2 pattern. Number 55 has a doorway to the left in a flush ashlar surround, and two 3-light flush mullion windows to the right. Above these are two similar 3-light windows and a single 20th-century window, all at eaves level. Number 57 features an off-centre doorway in a flush ashlar surround, with a single 3-light and a single 4-light casement window to either side, set in flush ashlar surrounds. Above, two similar windows are positioned at eaves level. Number 59 displays quoins and a central doorway within a flush ashlar surround, flanked by single 3-light flush mullion windows set in ashlar surrounds, with two corresponding 3-light windows above at eaves level. All windows feature 20th-century wooden casements. The right-hand return is rendered. The interiors were not inspected during the listing process.
