Description

The George Hotel is an early 19th-century building located on the east side of High Street in New Mills. It is a two-storey structure with a basement, constructed from coursed stone. The hotel sits lower on the hill, so the first-floor windows align with the ground-floor windows of the adjacent houses. The hotel features three windows, with the center one blocked, while the neighboring houses have two windows each, all with cill bands.

The ground floor of No. 70 has reeded pilasters, an entablature, and brackets supporting the cornice above the shop window, along with one window to the right. Both buildings have round-headed doorways adorned with keystones and impost blocks. The door of No. 68 has six panels, two of which are glazed, while No. 70 has a door that is now half-glazed. The lower floor of the hotel includes a three-light window, a stone porch, and one additional window.

At the rear of the hotel, there is a moulded eaves cornice and rusticated quoins. It has three windows with string courses at the cills and lintels, along with a round-headed doorway that features the hotel's name on the entablature and a moulded cornice. The building is included for its group value with the surrounding structures.
