Description

The Church of St James the Less and attached Almshouses were built in the 1880s by W Swindon Barber. They form a unified composition on the north and west sides of a court, extending to Nos 1 to 6 St James’s Square. The buildings are constructed of stone with green slate roofs. The almshouses, located to the west and north, connect with the church at the northeast corner, adjacent to the roadway. The almshouses have gabled facades, featuring mullion and transom windows and doorway openings in the form of pointed arches. The church has lancet windows on the sides and in the hexagonal apse, while the western gable includes a bell cote with coupled lights containing tracery. The windows have dripmoulds with human mask terminals. A porch provides access from the road. The interior is typical of the period and contains stained glass.
