Description

The barn at Longford Hall Farm, dating from 1760 with 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations, was built for the Cokes of Longford Hall, who were related to the Cokes of Holkham Hall. It is constructed of red brick with brick and stone dressings, featuring plain tile roofs with crowstepped stone coped gables and moulded kneelers on the original barn, along with a sawtooth eaves band and plain stone coped gables on the early 19th-century addition.

The structure has six bays and is a single storey with advanced gabled bays along the south elevation. There are two tall gabled bays at either end, each with crowstepped gables, and four lower early 19th-century bays in the centre. Each of these central bays has a segment-headed blind arch with a segment-headed stable door, except for the eastern one, which has a later window. The tall bays on either side contain large segment-headed arches with stone keystones and impost blocks; the eastern arch is now filled with 20th-century double doors and has adjoining 20th-century windows above, while the western arch features full-height plank doors.

To the east, a similar tall bay has a segment-headed door with a plank door to the west and an inserted window to the east, along with a plank door in a raised plain stone surround above. The equivalent bay on the west side has an inserted segment-headed doorcase with a plank door and a late 19th-century crowstepped gabled addition to the west. Above this bay is a small 19th-century window in a raised stone surround. The west gable wall displays an elaborate pattern of diamond breathers, with '1760 WC' highlighted in breathers in the gable. The interior features five braced king post trusses with side struts. There are also 20th-century additions to the west and north.
