Description
West Lodge, likely built around 1872 by T R Smith or 1879 by E M Barry, serves as the entrance lodge to Stancliffe Hall and is designed in the Francois I style. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a very steeply pitched slate roof with hipped and conical ends topped with pinnacles. It has a moulded stone eaves cornice with dentils, a stringcourse, and a first-floor cill course. The lodge is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-to-one bay front, including a semi-circular projection on the left side. The windows are a mix of one, two, and three-light designs, all with plain stone architraves and sash frames. Below the left-hand windows, there is an arcaded frieze. The dormers are adorned with semi-circular moulded stone architraves and finials. A large ashlar chimney stack features end shafts with lattice patterns. On the left-hand return, there is a substantial stone porch with panelled sides, massive corner piers topped with pediments, and an arched doorway. Stancliffe Hall, located to the north, dates back to the 17th century and has undergone work by T R Smith and E M Barry.
