Description

The Old Post Office is a house built around 1828 by L N Cottingham. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and quoins, featuring applied timber studding on the upper storey. The roof is made of stone slate with wide overhanging eaves and a brick gable stack topped with diamond-set pots. The building has three bays and is a single storey plus attics, with single bay, single storey side wings on either side.

The central gabled bay is advanced and has raised quoins, with a four-centred brick arch that contains a studded wooden door. On either side of this central bay are 4-light mullioned windows with four-centred arched lights, incised spandrels, brick sills, and dripmoulds. The recessed side wings feature similar 2-light windows. Above the central bay is a jettied gable with curved and diagonal timber studding and a 2-light mullioned window, which has an applied wooden Maltese cross above it. On either side, there are gabled dormers supported on bracketed stone sills, each containing similar 3-light windows with curved braces above. All the windows have 19th-century patterned light metal casements.
