Description

School House Cottages is a pair of cottages that were originally built as a school and schoolmaster's house in 1849 for the Harrisons of Snelston Hall. The building is made of red brick with sandstone dressings and features a steeply pitched roof that combines plain and fishscale tiles, complete with stone coped gables, moulded kneelers, and ridge finials. Each cottage has large external side wall stacks adorned with stone dressings and diamond set pots.

The structure is single storey with attics in gabled bays, and each cottage consists of two bays. The design includes tall advanced gabled crosswings on either side of a single storey range. Each gabled bay is supported by diagonal buttresses at the corners and features a central three-light chamfered mullion window. The recessed central wing has a chamfered four-centred brick arch on the east side with stone imposts, a central two-light chamfered mullion window with segment headed lights set in a four-centred arched brick surround, and a chamfered four-centred arched doorcase with a studded wooden door on the west side. Above this is a stone stringcourse with a low parapet.

In each gabled bay, there are two two-light mullion windows with segment headed lights beneath flat stone lintels, along with a chamfered brick lancet for attic ventilation at the top of the gable. All windows feature 19th-century patterned metal lights. The building is included for its group value only.
