Description
This is a mid-18th century town house, likely dating to around 1770, located in Ashbourne. It is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond, with some headers, and has a Staffordshire blue tile roof with brick end stacks, the stack on the left side being shortened. The building is arranged with a central hall and flanking rooms, featuring a projecting stair tower to the rear. The house is three storeys high.
The front elevation is distinguished by a central projecting bay, with steps and railings leading to a six-panelled front door set under a segmental arch. Above this door is a six-over-six pane sash window, also under a keyed lintel, and at the attic level is a three-over-three pane sash window set under continuous dentilled eaves. Flanking the front door, in each outer bay, are six-over-six pane sashes set under segmental arches, complete with panelled shutters.
The rear elevation features a central projecting stair turret with a hipped roof and a keyed lintel above an early 19th century door with margin panes. The windows here are six-over-six pane sashes, with the exception of a three-over-three pane sash to the second floor, all set under keyed lintels. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
The building retains a complete set of sash windows, likely dating from the early 19th century, and represents a provincial builder's interpretation of national architectural trends, particularly the style of 'piano nobile' inspired by Palladio.
